2021 National Gardening Survey released

The National Gardening Association today released the results of the 361 page National Gardening Survey, the nation's most comprehensive annual compendium of gardening activity and purchasing trends. Also released was a companion survey What Gardeners Think, a special 426 page report on gardeners' attitudes and gardening behavior.

Slow Flowers Society sponsors Cut Flower Questions on the 2021 National Gardening Survey

We are so excited to announce two new benchmarks on U.S. consumer attitudes toward buying American-grown and locally-grown cut flowers! Sponsored in part by the Slow Flowers Society, the 2021 National Gardening Survey asked two new and important questions: 1. When purchasing cut flowers, how important is it that the flowers are American-grown? 2. When purchasing cut flowers, how important is it that the flowers are locally-grown?

Weeds: Chickweed

Chickweed (Stellaria media) is a widespread, hardy annual often found in moist, fertile garden soil. In mild winter climates it begins blooming before winter ends. Edible but not very tasty, chickweed plants form dense 3-inch-tall mats of foliage studded with starry white flowers.

Rein in Storm Water with a Rain Garden

When a thunderstorm unleashes a torrent of rain, all that water landing on impervious surfaces like roofs, driveways, and walkways often runs off into the nearest storm drain and from there eventually to local waterways, or it goes directly into nearby streams, rivers, and lakes. Even when the rain lands on lawns, gardens, or other vegetated surfaces, so much comes down so quickly in a thunderstorm that much of the needed water runs off rather than soaking into the ground.
