Planting seed directly into the garden soil is an easy, one-step process for starting your crops. It eliminates the process of starting seed indoors in pots or trays, babysitting the seedlings while they develop, hardening them off, and finally transplanting into the garden. Although this method is not appropriate for all types of plants, there's a long list of vegetables, herbs and flowers that prefer to start their life this way. As the weather warms and the soil temperatures rise, the time is right for many of these crops to go in the ground: beans, corn, melons, squash, cucumbers, pumpkins along with many flowers and herbs fit into this group.
