See What's Growing🌱

In the Garden:
Mostaza Roja Mustard Mequasare
This is an Hispanic heirloom mustard with tender, mild flavored leaves and reddish seeds. It can be planted through the fall and winter in the low desert. It's very productive and a staff favorite. If the grow-out is successful seed will be available in the fall!
Baart Wheat
We planted Baart Wheat as a cover crop to help prepare the soil for summer crops. It does well in the low desert and requires less water than conventional varieties. The extensive root system adds organic matter and helps improve soil structure for better water absorption and infiltration to the benefit of summer crops.
Rarámuri (Tarahumara) Chicharos
These peas were originally collected along the edges of bean and corn fields, from the Sierra Madre in northern Mexico. This grow-out is a "regeneration" meaning it will replenish our seed bank samples and may not be immediately available for distribution.

Rarámuri (Tarahumara) Habas
When these fava beans are small and young, you can harvest and sauté the whole bean. As they get bigger they will stop pointing "up" and begin to droop and point at the ground. You can then pick and shell them for the bean inside. Here at NS/S we wait until the entire plant turns brown and dries out, and then gather mature seed for saving.
Welcome:
Meet Dr. Andrea Carter, NS/S Outreach Agronomist. With Dr. Carter on board, we have been able to greatly expand our Partner Farmer Program. Her research experience with drought-adapted crops has prepared her to meaningfully contribute to the NS/S mission to conserve and promote arid-adapted crop diversity and sustainable farming. You can learn more about the Partner Farmer Program here>>
In the Pantry:
Some Like It Hot!
